Oh you dont know what you were missing, the joy of trainspotting!
I spent my entire youth on the iron bridge near aristoc or at lacey fields.

I remember a friend in the 1950's who was an ardent trainspotter. He used to go onto Langley Mill rec at certain times of the day, stand at the top of the slide or on the kissing gate to get the number of certain regular trains.I could never see the point in train spotting-but then I used to collect car numbers (just as useless). I used to sit on Cromford Road with my note pad and pencil-you had time to write down the car number, colour, number of occupants, what they were wearing and eat a bag of Nibbets before the next car came along!

This is one activity I never really got into in a big way. The spot used to be the footbridge near Lacey Fields Farm. It was turn up some time in the morning then go home when the Thames Clyde Express had gone through, on the up run. It was hauled by a Jubilee class loco usually and flew through Langley Mill. Pistons etc going ten to the dozen, the odd wisp of steam or smoke and that oily smell was all that remained.

regards Phil
