Iceboy - are you certain it reads '8 weeks' for 1947. Dear, and there my nipper's memory could have sworn it was '80', at least.

Seriously though, the 1947 Winter actually did seem far colder than the 1963 one. But, as 1963 was the year my first Daughter was born - perhaps i missed the cold, to a great extent?
