Mapperley Church
replied on: 4/27/2005 12:13:18 AM

In the late 1950's or early 1960's Mapperley Church was affected by subsidence and demolished and rebuilt in a very modern style. A hut was erected on Cow Flats (the field behind the church) in which services were held while the rebuilding took place.
The chapel was closed late 1960's and became a workshop. About 15 years ago it was converted into residential premises-strangely enough the person who converted it and lived there with his family for a few years left Mapperley to train as a vicar!
There was another chapel in the village-in what (i believe) is the oldest existing house in the village.I recall an elderly lady in the village telling me that as a child she lived in there and there were "shelves" where the coffins used to be kept. Apparantly this chapel was used by monks and there reputedly was a tunnel which led to St Wilfred's West Hallam
