Chicken Steps
replied on: 10/19/2006 12:54:53 AM This is a picture of "Bennerley" on the Chicken Steps, circa 1947. ![]() As he says in his email to me, "They were blocks of gritstone set into the wall of the dam to the left of the bridge (i.e. if you were facing Woodside Pit direction). Why they were called Chicken Steps I do not know. Where they went I do not know either though I suspect they now form a nice path in someone's garden." |

Chicken Steps
replied on: 1/9/2006 10:06:35 PM What we used to know as Chicken Steps were located near the bridge which carried the coach road from Shipley Wood to Shipley Hall over the road which ran between the reservoir and the colliery railway lines. They provided steps between the two levels. As far as I recall, they took the form of stones sunk into the earth of the embankment, rather like the strips of wood on the planks which poultry use for access to their chicken houses. The bridge was still there in the early days of the American Adventure but I don’t know if it still exists. I went to have a look last weekend but access to the bottom end of the car park is blocked by a barrier and time and weather didn’t permit walking down. I’ll try again sometime during the season |

Chicken Steps
replied on: 11/30/2005 4:32:32 PM i thought the chicken steps was the name of the lane that runs between nottingham lodge and the bottom of American Adventure car park, thats what my grandma and grandad always used to call that road anyway, think the road was originally the mundy familys' own personal coach road !! |

Chicken Steps
replied on: 5/24/2005 1:20:19 PM The stepping-stones were approximately 3 yards from the pond's edge. They led from one side to the other. At one time, a couple of stones led to the bank on the middle edge, but a couple of those stones disappeared long ago. I just can't remember where i put 'em!!! Azzabuv. |

Chicken Steps
replied on: 5/6/2005 1:38:33 PM Does anyone know where the Chicken Steps were/are? Maybe this should be on Shipley section? They were possibly somewhere near one of the American Adventure car parks. One of the Mapperley residents remembers as a small child often walking with her family to the Chicken Steps, but can't remember where or what they were???? |
