replied on: 5/6/2005 5:32:18 PM Hi Jenny, Mr Harry Dennis who opened the concert with the pianoforte selection was probably Charles Henry Dennis who kept the Durham Ox for many years-he is listed as Harry Dennis in trade directories-although in 1895 he was a potter at Langley Mill Pottery. 7 Jan 1938 Ripley and Heanor We regret to announce the death of Charles Henry Dennis age 73 of the Durham Ox. He was the districts oldest licenced victualler. He passed away on Wednesday of last week and was buried at Aldercar Cemetery on Sat. Mr Dennis had been at the Durham Ox for over 30 years and formerley worked at Messrs Lovatt and Lovatt Pottery. His son Thomas carried on as landlord of the Durham Ox until he died in late 1950's Thomas was buried with his father (and mother) and the grave is one of the few remaining ones in Aldercar cemetery |
