Heanor Independant Chapel
replied on: 5/23/2005 12:36:20 AM The Independent Chapel was the one on Chapel Street, Marlpool, which later became the Congregational Chapel, and later still the United Reformed Church. There is a postcard of it, dated 1937, on the main website. It was built in 1821, and expanded in 1833. It did indeed have its own church yard, which was used for burials until 1856 when the municipal cemetery was established. The Independents, prior to building their chapel at Marlpool, had met at Milnhay and at shop premises in Heanor. |

I am wondering if it was possibly the Friends Langley Lane-most of my family who were baptised there were from Heanor, Marlpool, Langley and Shipley(Hassock Lane area.There must have been grounds to the chapel too, as I have burials there. |

replied on: 5/21/2005 4:19:07 PM From Wrights Directory of 12 Miles around Nottingham there is a list of Nonconformist Chapels. The main text for Heanor quotes there being an Independent Chapel but it's not on the list. List as follows, Friends, Langley Lane, Keeper Jno Moore Wesleyan. Church Street. Steward Mr Henry Noon, Keeper Thos. Wright Primitive, Park Street, Keeper John Beresford General Baptist, Derby Road, Keeper John Bamford United Methodist Free Church, Mount Street, Secretary and Steward Mr. Wm. Thorpe, Keeper Fdk. Shipley Salvation Army, West Hill I hope that the above is of use, perhaps the Independent is listed above under another title. Time to get ready for work, who in their right mind would start work on a Saturday night. regards Phil |

replied on: 5/21/2005 2:32:26 PM Does anyone know where this chapel was/is? I know building started in 1821. A member of my family tree was christened there in 1822, but in the chapel records her birth date is given as "Spring 1821 the day before the first stone of the chapel was laid" |
