Robert has heard this story it was one of the first things i related to him when the site was in its infancy.
Do you realise most children around 5 to 7 in the early 1940s had never seen any of the above fruit in the flesh so to speak.
During those dark days the post use to arrive from Nottingham on the first bus somewere between 4-30 am and 5-00am at the bus stop at the bottom of Milnhay Road it was my mothers job along with other members of the post office to collect the mail and take it to the PO for sorting.One morning as they were waiting a certain Constable appeared in the distance on a bycycle and upon drawing level promptly fell to the ground as we say now !!!!as a newt spilling
Oranges Lemons and Bananas all over Station Road Some of these where quickly scooped up and tucked away the constable was put on his bike and pointed in the right direction.A couple of days later mum let me take one of each to school for the teacher to show the other children as i say the things we take for granted where not always so.
However a week or so later i was approached by the constable got a clip round the ear and when i asked why was told ask your mother.
