Robey Fields Farm.
replied on: 6/13/2005 11:53:37 AM Patrisia. The 1891 Census details a Henry Day and Family living at 'Robeyfields' but NOT Robeyfields Farm, though it could well have been, as the other residences are simply called houses/cottages. Day. Henry. Head, aged 66, Farmer. Bn. - Eastwood, Notts. Day. Sarah, Wife, aged 67. Bn. - Langley Mill, Derbys. Day. Thomas, Son, aged 44, Farmhand. Bn. - Denby, Derbys. Day. George, Son, aged 26, Farmer. Bn. - Denby, Derbys. White. Mary, G-Daughter, aged 11? Scholar. Bn. - Loscoe, Derbys. White. Mary, G-Daughter, aged 10? Scholar. Bn. - Loscoe, Derbys. Wass/Wars? Thomas, aged 36? Servant, Bn. - Alfreton, Derbys. Azzabuv. |

Robey Fields Farm.
replied on: 6/13/2005 9:33:54 AM Yes, the connection is there, Patrisia. Jack Downs must have lived next/near to the old Denby Tavern Houses, on Denby Lane at the top of the Dumbles Lane. The Dumbles Lane led to the 'Dumbles Houses', another couple of isolated houses near the middle of the Dumbles. The two Robeyfields - farm and houses, lay a short distance to the East of the Dumble Houses. For a description of the Dumbles area, see the Heanor Thread, first page and near to the bottom of it - 'The Dumbles'. Derbyshire O.S. 1896/1900 Map. Azzabuv. |

Robey Fields Farm.
replied on: 6/10/2005 2:38:55 PM Thanks for that information, though, as always, it raises more questions. I am beginning to build up a reasonable mental picture of the Smalley area, only having been there once, but I haven't come across The Dumbles. The 1839 OS map shows a Robey Field just NW of Kidsley Park but no Dumbles. I tried a google and came up with this from an article by John Flint of Heanor, in the Derbyshire Evening Telegraph, 2 March 2004. He refers to a Jack Downs who ....' used to talk about life in Denby when he was a young man. He lived in an old cottage at the end of Dumbles Lane, which was a lane at the end of Chapel Row.' Given that Robey Field appears to be not far from Denby, as the crow flies, could there be connection? |

Robey Fields Farm.
replied on: 6/10/2005 11:38:29 AM Hi, again, Patrisia. The only Robeyfields Farm which i know of, is situated practically in the middle of the Dumbles. A pathway leads a short distance South to Kidsleypark Farm and the Heanor - Smalley Rd; Situated slightly North of the Robeyfields Farm and still in the Dumbles, is Robeyfields, which consisted of a couple of old houses in the 18th. Century. Azzabuv. |

Robey Fields Farm.
replied on: 6/9/2005 6:32:32 PM Robin Turton has asked me about this and I don't have it in my data store - for store read bits of paper and docs I have usually mis-filed! <g> He has a DAY family there in the late 1890s/early 1900s, not that I think any of your memories go back that far but..... We know that the Carrington Farm had been known as the Robey Pits Farm but it is unlikely to be that, as Richard Carrington, followed by Walker Martin were there up to the 1900s. But is the 'Robey' a clue? Could it have been in the area of the Robey Pits? As always, any contributions gratefully accepted. |
