replied on: 6/22/2005 12:53:03 PM There's nothing named as such on the 1896 O.S. Map, Phil. There is a largish looking building near where you say the school was, but, un-named. The 'Lakeside Business Centre' building is simply named 'The Coppice'. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 6/21/2005 12:46:18 PM Is Micheal House School a recent construction or is it the old school house extended? I have obtained from the old-maps site a couple of aerial views of the area. They have been subjected to a touch of computer jiggery-pokery to produce larger images. From the aerial shots, date not known, the area of the Top Hard Drift and sidings appear a shade of brown unlike the rest of the ground which is in various shades of green. After viewing the images I would say that the brown area looks the best candidate for the housing development. The American Adventure Park is clearly visible in the images. The old GNR branch line is well marked by the edge of the tree line. The old school house I remember was a 3 or 2 storey structure with the top floor having a lot more windows than the lower floors. The school was in a small copse near to the long gone level crossing, on the diagonally opposite corner to what is now the Lakeside Business Centre. The Lake has been added since the early 70s. I really must make the effort to walk the district again. That should bring back a flood of memories. regards Phil. |

replied on: 6/18/2005 8:42:14 PM I think i've found it, Phil. It's still called 'The Field' today. There are already a few houses and bungalows there from quite a few years ago. The lane leads off the Ilson/Heanor Rd; It looks like they're going to fill the spare space up on there. There'll be some muttering from the few present owner occupiers. But God (Money) WILL be God.... as usual. So much for the Green Belt area AGAIN. It's the lane next to the one leading to the American Adventure travesty. They could also be going to occupy the 'old Shipley Repair and Offices Site' too. It's next to it, in front. IF they do, they'll cut the wooded pathway to Shipley Pond from the AA. (The old Woodside Colliery railway track.) You're probably correct about them finding childrens skeletons around the proposed area. You've only got to look at the Peak's fabric factories. There's a field full near one of them from around the early 1800s. "Good old Victoriana". A direct insult to all the murdered children of those and after times. Urghh - what can you say? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 6/18/2005 7:28:29 PM Hiya Azzabuv, try putting the address into the address bar and pressing the go button, if that makes sense. To save your fingers try "http://www.fairgrove.co.uk/index.php" without the inverted commas. The address in the initial post worked ok for me at 19:10 hrs Cast you mind back to the early 18th century and the employment of children in mines. They were employed on the menial but essential jobs like door trapping etc. They would have come from orphanages in the cities and large towns. Micheal House School was built to educate? about 160 pupils. Assuming 3 children of school age per family that means around 50 families in the school catchment area. Think about how many families were living in the area and I would imagine there would be about 20 families within a 1 mile radius of the school. Have a look at Ian Winstanley's Coal Mining History Resource Centre for more information on child labour in coal mines. It will raise a few eye brows amongst other things. I would not be surprised at there being a few grusome surprises once foundation digging starts. Hopefully it will not happen but time will tell. regards Phil |

replied on: 6/18/2005 3:51:40 PM Hi, Phil. I've tried the Url address you've given several times without any success. Google just brings back each time - 'No such address'. If the new houses are going to be where you state, Shipley Park's being squeezed? "Skeletons" - do you mean Ancient or Miners? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 6/18/2005 3:06:28 PM I've been looking at this site http://www.fairgrove.co.uk/locations/old_school_woods/osw_home.php. It is the sales pitch for a development near Micheal House School. There is only a sketch map of the site location so I am not sure exactly where it is. Looking in the trusty A to Z street atlas I think it is in the area of what used to be some sidings for Woodside/Coppice Collieries. The drift at Woodside down to the Top Hard is possibly in the area of the developement as well. I wonder if any "skeletons" were turned up during the digging of the foundations ? Its just me being nosey. regards Phil |
