RIPLEY & HEANOR NEWS 11TH OCT 1946 SMALLEY HALL SALE Nearly £15,000 was realised from the three-day sale of furniture, jewellery and furs held by Messrs Richardson and Linnell for the executors of Mrs C, Cattle, of Smalley Hall, last week. A Maltese Cross pendant set with diamonds realised £380, and a diamond two-stone crossover ring and a three- stone diamond ring sold for £340 each. Three pairs of silk tapestry interlined curtains made £210, and a three- piece lounge suite upholstered in blue silk damask £135. An axminster carpet realised £140, and a Wilton carpet and Persian carpet £115 each. Coupons were rendered by purchasers of furs and clothes, the best prices being paid for an ermine fur coat £200, a dyed ermine fur coat with fox collar £135, and a black seal-skin coat £21. Bidding was extremely brisk in the linen section, embroidered tablecloths realised £10 10s and a pair of candlewick bedspreads £12 10s. Ten bottles of scent sold for £13 10s, and a brown leather handbag fitted with a clock went for £16. In the library sale a first edition of Thomas Hardy’s “Return of the Native” realised £6 10s and 28 volumes of “Cranford” in original cloth were sold for £12. Smalley Hall has been purchased for private residence by Mr. H. R. Edwards of Somercotes. Jenny

Azzabuv This message was updated on 7/11/2005 12:20:22 PM by Azzabuv	Stainsby house - the big white house replied on: 7/11/2005 12:14:36 PM This is the House i always wondered about over the last few years - (where could it be?) because of an article in the 'Doom and Gloom' --- sorry, that should read the 'Ripley and Heanor' newspaper, (a quip between Brian and i, Robert) concerning a foreign millionaire who had had - "a large, round Mansion built in the Heanor area, for his new bride". This does sound like the same house? Perhaps the word 'Foreign' crept in because of the original style in which it was built? That's very interesting about the 'She- Devil' location, Robert. A very good series. Azzabuv.
RMMee Moderator	Stainsby house - the big white house replied on: 7/11/2005 7:33:30 AM The present Stainsby House was completed in 1974. The architect was David Shelley, of Nottingham, and it was built for Robert Morley, then owner of Alida Packaging of Heanor Gate. A most unusual design, which attracted both praise and criticism at the time, the house had a helicopter landing pad, an indoor swimming pool, marble floors, solar panels, and gold-plate fittings. The living area was 15,000 square feet (about the size of 15 three-bedroom terraced houses!), and there were 18 acres of land to accompany it. It is often described as being "Spanish style," but I'm not sure that that is correct - the aim of the architect was to do away with straight lines, with the rooms being round or oval - curves everywhere. It one at least one award. By 1975, Mr Morley had moved to Guernsey, and the house was put on the market at £425,000 (remember - this is 30 years ago!). The property did not sell until 1977, by which time the price had dropped to a mere £150,000. It was on the market again in 1986, for £350,000. It has been used as a TV set. In BBC's "The Life and Loves of a She-Devil," it was meant to be an affluent clinic in California.
mal	Stainsby house - the big white house replied on: 6/24/2005 1:35:33 PM does anyone know anything about the current house and its history? i understand its an asian family who own the house currently.Also they have made some changes to the house itself.
