Watson connection, whether this can be linked Samuel who knows. Joseph Gillott's son Albert married Mary Ann Walker in 1907. Mary Ann's parents where Arthur Walker & Pheobe Ann Walker (nee Watson). For a distant Gillott Hollywood connection Mary Ann's sister Priscilla left Heanor for a new life in the states & her daughter Maggie Johnson married a certain Clinton Eastwood junior in 1953!

To all involved. Here's two other marriages, but not Alice nor Catherine.

Denby Marriage.
William Gillott m. Sarah Goodwin - 07/12/1818.

Derby All Saint's Marriage.
Samuel Brown m. Ann Caulton - 01/06/1837.

William Gillott, who was buried on 30/06/1867, was 62 years of age.

Hi Peter,
I think you have the right family, I've looked for a marriage for Samuel and Catherine at Heanor but not found them at St Lawrence church.
On the Derbyshire 1851 name index I found:
Brown,Alfred,3,,2126,81,104
Brown,Catherine,36,,2126,81,104
Brown,Mary A.,5,,2126,81,104
but no Samuel only the Samuel below in the same area:
Brown,Samuel,43,,2126,77,82
I still think it strange not having the father's name on the marriage cert and all the baptist 1860 its a long time after Mary Ann was born, I will keep looking thanks again Peter.

Jenny
1861 census Catherine Head
Mary Ann 1845
Eliza 1853
Alfred 1847
Walter 1849
All Living Nook End

Heanor Baptisms Taghill Site
Samuel and Catherine Nook End
Mary Ann bn 26-12-1845 bp 9-11-1860
Eliza bn 06-03-1853 bp 9-11-1860
Alfred bn 31-12-1847 bp 11-11-1860
Walter bn 21-01-1856 bp 11-11-1860
Would think these are the same children
as the census ages all seem to tally except for Walters birth could easy be a transcription error so could Samuel be the elusive father you are looking for

Hi Peter,
Thank-you for the info, I had found Catherine and Eliza Brown on the 1871 census but if on the marriage cert it was father -------- occupation ---------- the father was unknown/no name given, husband not the father and with a name like Brown its not easy, so I think its find Eliza’s birth and order the certificate.
Jenny
P.s. and I bet that will be father --- occ -----

Jenny
There is an Eliza Brown aged 8 on the 1861 Heanor census living at Nook End.On the 1871 census aged 18 she is living on Heanor Gate.In both cases the Head of the Family is Catherine Brown described as Widow in 1871.

Hi Jenny

Working on William Woodhouse from the 1861 census data you gave being Alice Gillott's father. I have stumbled across the marriage of Alice Woodhouse to William Gillott, 6th May 1827, Duffield.
Not from the area so is Duffield near Heanor?

I've read on other websites that if you didn't have, or couldn't afford to buy, a family plot when a baby died, a small space was cut into the side of a newly opened grave for someone else and the baby was buried on the small shelf.

Hi Nicola,
I’ve not got a marriage date for William & Alice Gillott (bef 1828?), I’ve looked at the Heanor records not there, the only records from the Independent Chapel, births baptisms/ deaths for 1822-1838 no marriage records? Maybe the chapel are still using the same books?

I’ve found:
Heanor Burials
634 Gillott 629 William Gillott Frame work knitter 61yrs Common Side Heanor grave number 1118, 22 Jun 1867
The next record is
635 Heaton 630 William Henry Heaton son of William Heaton 4days Langley Mill Grave number 1118, 22 Jun 1867 (both same grave number, maybe with him being a baby he was placed in the same grave?)

2377 Gillott 2371 Alice Gillott relict of William Gillott 79yrs Common Side 1107 23 Feb 1887

The National Burial Index
30 Jun 1867 William Gillott 62yrs Derby’s Heanor St Lawrence (61 or 62 yrs old and 22nd or 30th June 1867 for his burial)
I’ve not found them on the Memorials Inscriptions so no headstone.
happy hunting

hi jenny

Unfortunately marriage certificate does not give bride's fathers details (Luke & Mary Allen were the witnesses & Henry Hirst was the minister). If I find out I'll let you know. Do you know the names of William Gillott's parents?

Thank you

If you look on Churches/Chapels topic, there is info about Heanor Independant Chapel, where your ancestors were married-and more on the main site too-even a photograph-and really interesting info

Rec'd Joseph & Eliza's marriage certificate this morning. 29th June 1872, Independent Chapel, Basford Distrct marriage of Joseph Gillott (25yrs)to Eliza Brown(20yrs), both born Heanor. Joseph's father was William (deceased), framework knitter. So looks this ties in with your William & Joseph.
