To go back to the original question, I think the houses on the right (west) side are lower than the road simply because that is the way the ground is, with the land falling away to the west towards the Valley. Just think how steep Sunningdale Avenue is as it goes down from Ilkeston Road.

Even if the ground could have been built up to raise the houses, you would then have a big drop down to the back gardens.

I dont think subsidence plays a part, as both the road and the sorrounding ground would have subsidedby the same amount.

What timescale are you referring to?

My great grandfather was a miner and owned a whole street of houses -face workers/deputies at the mines were considered to be well paid -also your relative could have bought his own house and been left the other one by his father.

If you put this request on the family history section you may get more response.

I have an aunt who is in her late 70's and was/is a member of marlpool Congregational church -she may have recollections of your family.

actually, the houses to left are from the mining era, because of the marking on one of them azza. so the cottages must be much older than than those.the bungalows used to be an orchard from what my hard drive in my head can remember. over to anyone with any input.

Ice. Coal mines = coal removal = subsidence.

Blame Bob the Miner.

i've always wondered why the cottages on the right hand side of the ilkeston rd across from all saints church (is that right) are lower than the other buildings. some says it's because they are on the original level when the pond was there and they have built the road up since...true or false anyone.
