I think the eventual end came for 'Skin-Deep', because it was too energy sapping for the drummer concerned. A great way to slim though. Azzabuv.
Peter Chamberlain Researcher	'Skin-Deep' replied on: 7/10/2005 3:57:19 PM Skin Deep was a Solo Drum Composition written by Louie Bellson considered as good a drummer as Buddy Rich And Gene Krupa.His Wife was Pearl Bailey who performed in Sunday Night at the London Palladium when Clearly Drunk as a Skunk Gene Krupa toured Gt Britain with the Ted Heath band and performed this Solo at The Astoria Nottingham in 1955 and as you say it was a Show Stopper

He was the resident drummer, accompanist to a trumpet/sax player and a pianist - till 'Skin-Deep' time thankfully came around. It was as good as being in Loui's Rock 'n' Roll den, but just that little bit better because of the tall glasses. I seem to re-call the name 'Norman', from somewhere within the deepest of recesses in connection with him. He was a smallish bloke and square-set. Azzabuv.
Iceboy53	'Skin-Deep' replied on: 7/9/2005 4:55:13 PM well i know it wasn't cliff richard. i can't think who you mean actually, was it one of those things where the pubs and clubs used to have their own resident drummers,singers and piano players. if it was,shipley working mens club used to have them, the one who played the drums there in the early sixties and maybe in the 50s was "archie". ice
Azzabuv	'Skin-Deep' replied on: 7/9/2005 12:37:43 PM This drumming phenomenon occurred at the 'Rays Arms' pub, c.the late 1950s. Over a period of several months plus, the pub was packed to capacity on Saturday nights regularly. Also on Friday nights, just in case it was performed then, as it was occasionally. The solo drumming artist played on his group of drums and cymbols, on the small stage at the end of the large room. Around 9: P.M., silence descended as the drummer settled himself in front of his drums. As soon as the first drum tap was heard, spontaneous clapping, cheering and whistling filled the rooms, then a moment later, with full audience peace and quiet, the rolling of the bass drums began and not another sound was heard, save the deep beat of the drums for another quarter of an hour. The drummer was a superp artist and totally enthralling to watch. The drumming rhythm was called - 'Skin-Deep'. At the same time, this same rhythm was being played every weekend at the large 'Shoulder of Mutton' pub, South Normanton. This too, was packed to overflowing, everyone waiting for the beginning of the solo played - 'Skin-Deep'. As quickly as it arrived on the music scene, so 'Skin-Deep' faded into relative obscurity. A great shame. To watch it being played, was simply a wonder to behold. It was only in the realms of the most professional drummer, to carry this complicated rhythm through in all its awesome, but highly enjoyable entertainment/viewing. Does anyone remember the name of the regular 'Rays Arms' drummer of that period. He was one of the Kings of 'Skin-Deep' and it was a perfect pleasure to watch such an enthusiastic, extremely professional artist at work. Highly recommended. Azzabuv.
