I chucked cham into the yahoo search engine. One of the links was to a site dealing with the Roman Catholic faith. Cham has biblical connections (The Book of Genesis)and Cham commited a great act of irreverence. It could be a polite way of indicating that the child may have been born out of wedlock. Possibly being raised by his/her grandparents as their own child.

It's an avenue worth exploring especially if the family at the time were of the Roman Catholic faith.
