SMALLEY HALL SALE
Nearly £15,000 was realised from the three-day sale of furniture, jewellery and furs held by Messrs Richardson and Linnell for the executors of Mrs C, Cattle, of Smalley Hall, last week.
A Maltese Cross pendant set with diamonds realised £380, and a diamond two-stone crossover ring and a three- stone diamond ring sold for £340 each. Three pairs of silk tapestry interlined curtains made £210, and a three- piece lounge suite upholstered in blue silk damask £135. An axminster carpet realised £140, and a Wilton carpet and Persian carpet £115 each.
Coupons were rendered by purchasers of furs and clothes, the best prices being paid for an ermine fur coat £200, a dyed ermine fur coat with fox collar £135, and a black seal-skin coat £21.
Bidding was extremely brisk in the linen section, embroidered tablecloths realised £10 10s and a pair of candlewick bedspreads £12 10s. Ten bottles of scent sold for £13 10s, and a brown leather handbag fitted with a clock went for £16.
In the library sale a first edition of Thomas Hardy’s “Return of the Native” realised £6 10s and 28 volumes of “Cranford” in original cloth were sold for £12.
Smalley Hall has been purchased for private residence by Mr. H. R. Edwards of Somercotes.
