Sue, this is taken from the Society's Newsletter, number 107 and originally contributed by Mr. P. Eggleshaw - May, 1984.

Shanakiel.
"The explanation of the name 'Shanakiel' starts in the early years of the 1890s, when a young Irish Doctor, Ernest Victor Eames, arrived in Heanor to take up a partnership at West Vale House, West Valley. (bottom of Derby Rd;, opposite Mount St; and was also Dr. Donnigan's old house of the 1950s. Azzabuv).

A few years afterwards, Dr. Eames had purchased a considerable area of land off Ilkeston Rd;, which has originally been part of the old Heanor Hall Estate. On this, he planned to build a large house, with stables and have room to graze and exercise his horses. The contract to build the house was given to Mr. Durow, of Marlpool.
The building was planned for a dual purpose - as a dwelling, but also with a private nursing home on the premises. On completion of the building, the house was named 'Shanakiel', an Irish name. The meaning of the name is not understood, though it could stem from the river Shannon area of Ireland?

Being a great horseman, Dr. Eames used to hold a meeting of the hounds at Shanakiel.
The Dr.'s children consisted of one son and two daughters, with the youngest, Peggy, still alive and well in Ireland.

Part of this information concerning Shanakiel, was given to me, by an old employee of Dr. Eames, Mr. Wright Woodhouse, of Smalley."

The Irish name 'Shanakiel', means 'Old Wood'.
