Tram and Trolley bus
replied on: 10/21/2007 11:09:06 AM

My Great Grandad was, apparently, one of the first tram drivers on the Ripley to Nottingham route in 1913-14.

Does anyone know if there are employee records existing so that I can find out when he worked for the company?

Many thanks

Seen at Sandtoft near Doncaster about 7 years ago or more.Ex Notts & Derby Traction NNU 238 sold to Bradford Corporation 1953. Where is it now I wonder, and what condition is it in? It was parked side by side with a dozen or so other Bradford Trolley Buses, and very hard to photograph.

Last Tram ran 3rd Oct 1932

so
The Gazette 6th Jan 1933

"The Tram Track"
"A start is to be made on Monday with the work of taking up the tram track. About 30 men will be set on, and work will be commenced at Codnor Gate. men who have been unemployed will be engaged, and although the actual time for the job cannot be estimated, I understand that it is likely to last for something like six months. The whole road is to be relaid and there will probably be new foundations; this of course means that all the present road will have to be broken up, hence the long period which the work is expected to take. This will be very pleasing news to all motor drivers who use the road regularly, for during the last few months it has been in an abominable state.

Tram Smash
On Tuesday a couple of cars collided in the fog. One was coming from eastwood direction and the other from the depot. The car going towards Heanor contained a number of passengers and so violent was the collision that they were hurles across the vehicle, whilst both tram fronts were wrecked. Conductor buxton received injuries on the face and head from broken glass and driver Reader was injured on the leg.

My dad used to be a bus conductor with Midland General, for a few years in the late 1950's.

I presume the term must have come form something like "conductor man" as one of the conductor's jobs during the trolley-bus era would be to re-attach the pole to the overhead cable if it ever got dislodged.

In my youth visiting Derby I can still remember the trolley busses. The pole to attach the cable rider was a long bamboo that fitted into a tube that ran the length of the bus on the pavement side, with access to it from the platform.

R&H 20 July 1950
Heanor trolley Bus Route
The appearance of Mansfield Rd Heanor has been improved during the last few days by the installation of new equipment on the Notts & Derbys Traction Company's trolley vehicle overhead wiring. The new "twin line hangers" (to give their technical name) are of streamline appearance and permit an economy in the amount of galvanised strand wire and other fittings needed to support the trolley vehicle overheadline, whilst providing for improved horizontal alignment of all four copper wires."

All will be found at http://uk.geocities.com/jg4fun2001. It is the story of the Ripley Rattlers, found by the best search engine in the universe, Copernic Professional.

There's one thing i miss about those old trams and the soon to be (as was) petrol buses and that was picking the various companies/counties out by their livery colours.
