Milnhay House and Edstone House
replied on: 9/30/2005 1:43:35 PM I have that book-I think you are correct in thinking it was 2 dwellings. In 1950's I recall a friend working in the "Pottery offices" - she was a secretary and I think there was only one room of the building used-there were only 2 people working "in the Offices" |

replied on: 9/29/2005 1:22:10 PM W H Calvert lived at Pottery House in 1871-I assume this is the house which became Offices for the Pottery? Does anyone know if this house was built for the pottery owner? |

replied on: 9/29/2005 7:09:35 AM I can confirm that it was Albert at Edstone House - Kelly's Directory, 1899. As I said above, Henry Hardwick Smith was at Milnhay House. William Smith now lived at Dunstead House. (And Mrs Turner lived at Dunstead Lodge.) |

replied on: 9/29/2005 1:32:30 AM Found 1901 census-same as you Peter- Eyres at no 7, Albert Lovatt at no 9-this must be Edstone House, as Living there are Albert and Eliza and their children:Albert, Reginald and Rachael(father and son Albert both described as Pottery Manufacturers), a house maid, a cook. |

In the 1881 census John is still at home at Belper but cannot find Albert. In the 1891 census John lives AT 17 Station Road Langley mill and Albert at 16. 1901 census John still on Station Road And Albert at 9 Milnhay Road(could this be Edstone House) |

replied on: 9/28/2005 6:36:22 PM Lovatt can be found at Edstone House in Directories, even if he missed the census years there. |

replied on: 9/28/2005 6:26:17 PM 1871 Census says W H Calvert lived at Pottery house on his own with a domestic servant.Milnhay House was occupied by William Smith Corn Miller,no mention of Edstone House.During the War Years Edstone was occupied by a Miss or Mrs Hardwick-Smith and Milnhay House by another member of the Smith family.Just after the war Butcher Allen who had the shop now closed on Cromford Road between Bridge Street and Dean Street purchased Milnhay House |

replied on: 9/28/2005 5:52:15 PM I have a census form on which my EYRE ancestors were living next door to the Lovatts on Milnhay road-so presumably they lived next to Edstone House? I know they lived at (among other numbers) no 6 and no 22. Something else for me to find!!It always puzzled me as to why a pottery owner would live next to my humble Coal mining families! |

Milnhay House and Edstone House
replied on: 9/28/2005 5:16:27 PM Yes, they're gone, but certainly Milnhay House was around till at least the 1960's albeit derelict. (I think Edstone went earlier than that, but I may be wrong.) The wall between Milnhay House and Milnhay Road has only recently been demolished. Certainly, at one time Edstone House was occupied by Mr Lovatt, of the pottery. Prior to him, I believe it was William Smith's (of the flour mill). In the 1890's Milnhay House was occupied by Henry Smith (son of William). Any old photos of these buildings would be appreciated. I have one of Milnhay House (which I am saving for a new page on the main site), but I don't think I have one of Edstone. |

Opposite the bus stop at the bottom of Milnhay road was a large house which I remember as being offices for the Pottery-was this house either Milnhay or Edstone? Has anyone any info on these houses or the area at the bottom of Milnhay Road? |
