replied on: 10/1/2005 8:27:19 PM quote: Not sure what you mean with this one Ice. The turnpike road preceded the Nottingham Canal and the Cromford Canal by more than twenty years. It isn't, of course, a coincidence that the roads and canals went between the same places - Cromford was a very important centre for manufacturing, and Nottingham was a major outlet. |

replied on: 10/1/2005 8:24:29 PM Dunstead (this cropped up in another thred too didn't it?) - earliest known usage of the name is in 1687. Gladstone Street - named after William Ewart Gladstone, prime minister 4 times between 1868 and 1894. Argyle Street - Argyle is a local name, and the street may be named after a founder member of the Heanor Board of Health, John Argyle. Campbell Street - possibly named after Colin Campbell, who was a national hero with the army during the Indian Mutiny. Bank Street - a bit of a tricky one! Probably just named after a landscape feature - a bit of a bank at the top of the slope from Cromford Road. |

replied on: 10/1/2005 6:26:35 PM BRIDGE ST-I assume it was called this because of the Iron Bridge at the top of the Street. EAST VIEW TERRACE-the view from the front of the Terrace is to the East-over the (at one time) brickworks and railway line-known locally as "Penders Row" (when I was young, anyway)-the terrace was built by Mr Pender-whether it was ever officially called Penders Row, I don't know? WESLEY ST-probably named after John Wesley-and of course the Weslyan chapel was on the corner of the st UPPER/LOWER DUNSTEAD ROAD-this area was called Dunstead-and there was Dunstead house GLADSTONE, ARGYLE, CAMPBELL , QUEEN ST-these were named after notable people of the day-but what about the St which runs across the top of them BANK ST? Who or what was that named after? |

History behind the street/road names Langley mill
replied on: 10/1/2005 6:05:22 PM So named because it was part of the Cromford to Langley Mill turnpike road, which was itself part of a larger Cromford to Nottingham turnpike (1766). So, for the same reason, Nottingham Road at Codnor is so named, as is Cromford Road at Ripley. |
