History behind the street/road names Langley mill
replied on: 10/1/2005 8:24:29 PM

Dunstead (this cropped up in another thred too didn't it?) - earliest known usage of the name is in 1687.

Gladstone Street - named after William Ewart Gladstone, prime minister 4 times between 1868 and 1894.

Argyle Street - Argyle is a local name, and the street may be named after a founder member of the Heanor Board of Health, John Argyle.

Campbell Street - possibly named after Colin Campbell, who was a national hero with the army during the Indian Mutiny.

Bank Street - a bit of a tricky one! Probably just named after a landscape feature - a bit of a bank at the top of the slope from Cromford Road.
