replied on: 11/14/2005 8:30:43 AM MAY was the only daughter of Mary Jane Cripps and Wlliam Henry Harriman (known as Henry)She had 2 brothers, William Arthur (died 1927 age 30) and Bernard b. 1902. I believe Bernard stayed in the Langley Mill area.She married Lawrence Statham who worked in the 1930's as a railway shunter. May's mother(Mary Jane) was a milliner and had a shop on Station Road langley Mill, she also taught the millinery trade,having taught Nellie Outram, who became a well known local milliner.Mary Jane, died at daughter May's home 507 Tamworth Rd Long Eaton in 1932, but her own home at that time was at 49 Dunstead Rd Langley Mill. Members of my family remember May's paintings-especially one of a lioness and her cubs and one of a large basket of fruit-apparantly the paintings were very realistic. There is a photograph in existence (I have seen it-but don't have it) of May's mother wearing a black dress which was decorated with roses which had been painted in oil onto the fabric by May-very professionally too. I am not sure when May died,but it was possibly in 1970's - there are memories of her death being reported in the Nottingham Evening Post. MAY had one son Jack Statham who was born in 1941 (when May was 37) at the Railway in Long Eaton. Maybe Jack kept her paintings? -but no one seems to know where Jack went-it is believed he married in 1960's to a girl called Florence from the Birmingham area. Hope this information may "ring a bell" with someone??? Especially re: the whereabouts of her paintings. |

"Edith May Harriman (known as May) b.1904 Station Road Langley Mill was a very talented artist/milliner/pianist. Apart from painting on canvas, she used "unusual" bases. She painted in oil on soft furnishings, dresses, all kinds of things. She lived on Station Road until after her marriage to Lawrence Statham. She was also a talented pianist-and played piano in public houses. She (along with her husband) eventually kept a pub -The Railway at Long Eaton,(1930's to possibly 50's or even later)." Can anyone add more about this lady - I had not heard of her prior to today. |
