The comprehensive system employed was the 'Leicestershire two tier with option' system.

That was well remembered! I'd never heard of the system until recently, but had it fully explained to me by Geoff Stone (head of Heanor Grammar from 1957 till its end) earlier this week.

In my day, there were three different coloured letters that you might take home at the end of the 2nd form. One colour meant that you were recommended to move up to the Grammar School (but it was up to your parents either way). One colour meant that you were recommended to stay at Aldercar, but it was up to your parents. The third colour meant that it was up to your parents!!

According to Mr Stone, not many parents went against the advice received.
