Can't help about the Four Bums.

However, Santa brought me a copy of a book published in the 1970's, called "Weak I'th' Yedd: Marlpool Memories," which contains some reference to the White Lion. The author is here talking about 1910's:

"Our cottage was held up on one side by a cobbler's shop, and on the other by the White Lion Inn, more popularly known as "The Glass House," though the glass had all long gone before I came upon the scene. I understand that before the '14-18 war visitors came from miles around in all manner of horse-drawn transport to relax and quench their thirsts amongst a profusion of foreign birds and florabundi...."

"Some half-dozen yards from the house, and held up by the Glass House pig-cotes, were the coal house, a double seater privy...."

Some useful additional stuff on the Crystal Palace there.
