Chicken Steps
replied on: 1/9/2006 10:06:35 PM

What we used to know as Chicken Steps were located near the bridge which carried the coach road from Shipley Wood to Shipley Hall over the road which ran between the reservoir and the colliery railway lines. They provided steps between the two levels.

As far as I recall, they took the form of stones sunk into the earth of the embankment, rather like the strips of wood on the planks which poultry use for access to their chicken houses.

The bridge was still there in the early days of the American Adventure but I don’t know if it still exists. I went to have a look last weekend but access to the bottom end of the car park is blocked by a barrier and time and weather didn’t permit walking down.

I’ll try again sometime during the season
