replied on: 1/29/2006 7:39:44 PM RIPLEY AND HEANOR NEWS DEATH OF CODNOR VETERAN. 26TH JANUARY 1940 The village of Codnor has this week lost one of its best-known personalities by the death of Mr. German Gill, of Heanor Rd, which occurred on Sunday morning at 82 years of age. All his life had been spent in the village, and up to three years ago he had lived a most active life. More than 40 years ago he started a business in hardware, which flourished under his conscientiousness, and which is now being carried on by his son, Mr. Joshua Gill. In this direction he made many friends and acquaintances, all of whom would vouch for his uprightness and cheerful disposition. He was a keen supporter of the Methodist cause and in his younger days was a Sunday school teacher at the Bethesda Methodist Church, where he and his wife worshipped devotedly for many years. A great lover of the peak district, Mr. Gill rambled over its hills and dales on every possible occasion, and even up to three years ago it was a familiar sight to see him and his old friend Mr. Fred Severn setting out "a hiking". He was predeceased by his wife 16 years ago and for the last 15 months lived with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charlesworth, at the above address. Although in failing health, it was not until three weeks ago that he became seriously ill. |
