Hi Suz, Jenny,

Since your help with the other Clarke names, I've come up with a few more names I would like information on:

Thomas Clarke b circa 1853. (Suspect he died before 1871, but baptism, marriage, burial would be great if available)
(son of James and Amy)

All dates are circa

Ann Clarke 1823
John Clarke 1831
Thomas Clarke 1832
William Clarke 1835
(all children of John and Hannah)

John Clarke 1801
Hannah Clarke 1801

Many many thanks in advance

Do you know of any similar researchers who hold records for Heanor or Ashbourne at all?

Thanks

Thanks so much for the information on Clarkes' marriages at Codnor!

Some of them are spelt Clark (no e) in some of the census returns.

However, since my grandfather's middle name was "Clarke" then I have to presume the intention was for it to be spelt with the "e"!

Thanks again!

Just a couple of questions on all your help!

1) Did Mary Clarke(daughter of James and Amy)really get baptised in 1887? if so, this is quite late really! She would have been 18!

2)Did Amy Clarke die in 1901 the same as James?

3)At the time of George Fogg and Elizabeth Clarke's marriage, was George Fogg's father John a "cab" or a "lab" proprietor?

If there is any more information about any of this branch of Clarkes, in particular baptisms and deaths/burials then I would be very grateful.

Thanks

JMax,

I am interested in the book you mention by Fred E Thorpe. Is it still in print? Where can I get a copy?

I have a copy of a document written by Mr Thorpe on some family history and I am wondering if there might be more references to the Woolley family in the book.

Like any info you can share.

Thanks

there are quite a few more Clarkes-if you need any more

PS A 2x Great Aunt of mine married a Clarke, was widowed and then married another Clarke(not related)- the problem was that she knew the first Clarke had an "E"-but never knew if the second Clarke did (2nd husband never learned to read and write) -so she used to sign her name CLark-and then put a little sqiggle on the end, just in case there should heve been an E!!!!

Hi there,

Not used this site before, but looks good!

I'm presently researching the Clark(e)s of Loscoe/Codnor. Sometimes they are registered with and sometimes without the "e"

I'd be grateful of the following information if available:

Elizabeth Clark(e) m George Fogg 26/12/1887 who are the witnesses do you know?

James Clark(e) m Amy Hicking

Any of the following Clark(es) marriages

Ann b1855
Jane b 1857
Francis b 1859
James b1861
Hannah b 1863
Polly b 1864
Mary b 1869
Laura/Lora b 1870

Many many thanks

JMax

Alittle mystery -Middleton Avenue was supposed to join up to Codnor Deby lane -but it doesn't! Have yet to discover why???

Could be because some pieces of the land for sale did not sell/get built on for some time.

Or the fact that the land in between was consecrated to be used as a further cemetery. I will take a look at the plans and try to work it out.

I have ordered a copy of the Sanderson’s map to see what is around that area earlier. If anyone knows or has a copy of the land before the sale plans where drawn up then that might also help.

Thanks- I have the Fred Thorpe book and know of this sale plan. It is the buildings that were there before this that I am interested in.

The land behind the gardens was consecrated
To be used for future burials but in the 1970's some was offered for sale to the residents whose properties backed onto it. It was purchased on the understanding that it could never be built on.

Plans of valuable building land and property situate at Cross Hill Codnor in the County of Derby belonging to The Rev. M. H. Middleton
This is a map of the land its in a book by Fred S. Thorpe “The Heritage of Codnor & Loscoe” also I’ve seen the same map on the wall (near the fire place) in the Ormonde Club “Marquis of Ormonde” Codnor Denby Lane.

This is all really interesting stuff. I am not to sure where to post my reply. here or on the Codnor posting?
I can remember reverend Middleton (the second one) from when I was a child.

I wonder if it’s possible to find out when the first vicarage was built? I understand that it was after the Church. I think this because the house I was born in was apparently used by the first reverend Middleton before this. I think all the land between Codnor Denby lane and Springfield Avenue. (including the land where the church was built), originally belonged to this property.
