Robert, first of all,I've registered only yesterday. Credit to you all for a fantastic site.I lived in Thompson Street,until moving to Derby in 1960 and remember Harry Davis's shop's very well. The picture on Station Road is certainly Harry's shop.I think the decorative carving to the left was the Co-op butchers.His shop in North Street was opposite the Gasworks,in between West Street and Orchard Street.My father used to take him to the wholesale market very early mornings to buy mainly fruit.A lady used to serve in the North Street shop, maybe his sister? On the other side of that entrance was an hairdressers shop, Mr.Carver who lived at the top of Thompson Street,he also had another barber,Mick Reilly,working with him.
Next door was Morleys Grocers before getting to the Erewash Hotel, on the corner of North Street. On the opposite corner was Joe Pyes off licence.
Advertisements from a 1924 magazine reads:
