quote: Has anyone mentioned Mabels (Im sure that was the name) The shop on the corner of Gladstone street and Cromford road. I remember toys and sweets, but I think she sold quite a range, mainly food. If I went straight to my grandmas after school my aunt was sure to go to Mabels for cakes when she came home from Aristoc, never failed. A similar shop Bessy's, on Dunstead road Aldercar 1950's/60's, her husband was a driving instructor. I think they took over a pub in Eastwood. Mrs Hunt took the shop in Aldercar, I think her husband was a butcher Ripley way.
Was that the shop on the right just after George Street? only there used to be a shop between Godkin Drive and Ormonde Street on the right and was owned by Newtons around the same dates that you have. PaulR
