There is still a chippy on Peel St in the same place as "Maurices"
I remember Maurice's well-it was a grocery shop with a chip frying range behind the grocery counter. Evenings and Fri/Sat lunchtimes were his "frying" times. People would take their dishes, plates etc wrapped in a teatowel to have them filled. If you didn't fancty fish or meat pie, Maurice would cut you a slice of home cooked ham to have with your chips. He had a very good reputation around the area. Maurice, if I recall correctly, was a stocky dark haired man, not too tall-he was always working-I seem to recall he had a bad leg, but that could just have been the way he walked as he carried in heavy buckets full of potatoes-chipped and ready to fry. Everything he sold was "top quality"
