replied on: 5/4/2006 11:22:00 PM Empire Day was celebrated in schools and village groups, churches etc would put on shows-and as the Pynegars used to organise shows ,concerts etc in Heanor, I suspect it was a show, concert which was done for Empire Day. Empire Day was always on 24 May (from 1916) -Queen Victorias birthday -and was mainly a celebration of the youth of the Empire.Cadets paraded, flags were flown, 1958 the name changed to Commonwealth Day 1966 it was linked to Queen Elizabeth11 official birthday in June. The Queen sends a message to the youth of the Commonwealth by BBC World Service As for Silver Lining Day -not a clue-but am sure someone will know. |
