Mill Hay?
replied on: 5/16/2006 12:22:06 PM Hi Guys, Thanks for all the info...that is interesting to learn that the Aldred's/Aldread's/Alldread's (I have all three spellings!!) lived there in the 1600's. That's made me more determined to find out more about them...I'm at 1776 so haven't got that far back to research! |

replied on: 5/16/2006 9:20:42 AM Burto, If you look on the Langley Mill and Aldercar Forum -there is a topic on Milnhay House and one on Milnhay Road -may give you a little insight into the area. Also on the main site is an article on "Langley Mill in 1840-worth a read |

replied on: 5/15/2006 9:05:07 PM This time you could be correct with a family connection. From the Historical Society book - Origin of Heanor Street Names Aldred's Lane. Aldred is an old, local family name, there is a reference in the parish registers to Elizabeth Aldred in 1626 and later Robert Aldred owned land in the area. Sue |

replied on: 5/15/2006 6:30:47 PM In Derbyshire wills Aldread is spellt Aldred on most of the ones from Ilkeston'Heanor/Belper area. I shouldn't get too excited about a road name - I lived at Moons Yard for a time -so named because 1800's almost every house was occupied by the Moon family. But then again roads were named after councillors, etc-in more recent parts of Heanor now the road names have an explanation underneath telling who the roads are named after! Really good idea! |

replied on: 5/15/2006 4:28:18 PM Hi Suzard, Thanks for that...curiouser and curiouser! Would someone have to have been quite a noted person to have a street named after them? Am I about to discover some exciting ancestoral connection to Aldreads Street?! |

replied on: 5/15/2006 12:08:02 PM "Mill Hay" is an area of Langley Mill -now called Milnhay-Milnhay Road goes from just before the railway bridge in Langley Mill and goes through to Langley. It originally was called Mill Hay and was in Heanor Census district. 1901 census it is referred to as Milnhay. Lots of my ancestors lived there-so maybe our families were neighbours! By the way-Milnhay is quite close to Aldreads Lane!!! |

replied on: 5/15/2006 10:51:23 AM Hi, I've been told I had ancestors who lived at "Mill Hay" in Heanor according to an 1851 census return. Does/did this place exist, as there was some confusion about the spelling! Thanks. |
