replied on: 7/26/2007 12:45:36 PM I found this in the Heanor Observer: June 1st 1911 Heanor Observer Miner’s foot blown off Accident at the Ormonde Colliery A serious accident befell Isaiah Walker 35 of Ray St Heanor a deputy at the Ormonde Colliery Loscoe on Thursday afternoon. He was engaged in firing a shot in the pit, and noticing something smouldering on the ground he put his foot on it. Instantly there was a loud report and the poor fellow’s left foot was blown clean off. With great pluck he bound the terrible injury up himself until assistance arrived. He was then brought to the surface, and conveyed to the Nottingham General Hospital. It is expected that an artificial limb will be provided for him, on inquiry at the hospital yesterday we learned that he is making remarkably good progress, and it is expected he will be able to return home very shortly. replied on: 7/26/2007 9:58:00 AM 14th July 1911 R/ H, Local Colliery Managers Puzzled Experts and a Heanor Accident “Hang-Fire Shots” A remarkable accident recently occurred at Ormonde Colliery, Loscoe, in which a deputy had his foot blown off by a high explosive. It appears that the detonator had ignited the explosive, detonating pressure resulting in the explosive burning in the hole until sufficient force had been gathered to blow out the stemming. (Part of the report) I have two reports for this accident but it just refers to the “deputy” no names. Jenny |

replied on: 7/31/2006 2:15:05 PM Have a look at, http://www.terryblythe.co.uk/page93.html a short history of Ormonde Colliery based on the memories of A Hudson. A Hudson started work at Ormonde Colliery when a lad. He retired as the Training Officer for Number 5 Area based at Eastwood Hall. I met him when I was started the selection phase of my NCB apprenticeship. If you go to the Terry's home page there is more information on local to Heanor Collieries. Bill Riley's site at, http://www.pitwork.net contains many pages of coal mining related items. Of particular interest is a sequence of photographs entitled "Do's and don'ts". These photographs were in a booklet issued by the Number 5 Area in the late 50's and are posssibly taken at locations in the Heanor area. Hope the above is of interest to all especially to "them as wokked there". regards Phil |

replied on: 7/31/2006 1:33:09 PM did anyone work at Ormonde? do you have any stories to tell? ACCIDENT AT LOSCOE CROSSING Bus smashes through the gates GATEKEEPER BADLY INJURED 20th April 1928 On Tuesday morning an accident which might have been attended with more serious results occurred shortly after 6.30 at Loscoe Crossing. The gates had been closed to allow the loco to pass through from the colliery side to the main line, and Mr Charles Draycott, the gatekeeper, was standing on the crossing, when a Midland General bus from Heanor direction, driven by H. Sharpe, crashed into the gates, knocking the keeper down. He sustained scalp wounds and injuries to the back of the head, and bruises about the body. The injured man was removed to his home, no 3 Granville Street (Grandfield St?) Loscoe, where he was attended by a doctor. One of the gates was smashed to pieces. The driver’s explanation is that he was prevented from seeing the gates owing to dense steam from the engine, which had just passed through the gates. Jenny |
