Closure of Langley Mill Police Station
replied on: 8/15/2006 8:17:41 PM Thank You JENNYPEG for your item 14th Aug. and to Peter Chamberlain for bringing the issue to my attention. Ref. 142 and 144 Station Road. ex Telephone Exchange...This property was bought by Messrs. Wood Bros (Builders) Ltd. (My two brothers) and modernised (What a mis-used word) I was married in June 1958 and bought 144 Station Road for the sum of £750. (Mortgage of £500). We lived there for some years before moving to Milnhay Road. Of course we remember the property and conditions vividly as I used to leap down the stairs in the middle if the night to fill baby bottles at times. Ref. The Police Station during the 2nd World War...At this time we lived at the top of Howitt Street and my father was in the Special Constabulary. This required once a week attandance at the Police Station at Langley Mill. I have my fathers Special Constabulary Medal for this service during the War. I well remember the things that I overheard and ref. a Mr Frank Hurt of Langley who seemed to be quite a character. I would be 10 years old at this time but well remember the remarks. I hope that these comments are of interest to readers....Colin |
