Peacock Colliery
replied on: 11/17/2006 12:11:52 AM Hi, Many thanks indeed for going to the trouble to locate those Shorthose photos - I do appreciate it and although I had seen the gathering of councillors before in the History of Ilkeston book (of which I have Joseph Shorthose's own copy) it was great to be able to print off some copies for my files. With regards to the one of Peacock Colliery - I actually have an original of this photo; I was unaware however that Joseph Shorthose became bankrupt in March 1889 - can this be verified as it is complete news to the family. Does anyone know anything about the little girl in the other Shorthose photo called June Shorthose? Regards Shortsocks |

Pubs in Cotmanhay circa 1875
replied on: 11/15/2006 11:25:26 PM Just had a look for them and they have vanished. There were about 6 of buildings with a Shorthose connection. Try putting Shorthose into the top box of the search page then click on the search all text box directly under it. Select search and it should find 4 images with a shorthose link. The images that may be of interest to you are, DCER001360.jpg, DCER001356.jpg and DCER001355.jpg. The name of the Peacock Colliery may indicate that it was sunk to work the Peacock Seam. The Peacock coal was very bright and scintillated in bright light. I am not sure what the seam,s more modern name would be. One of the Piper Seams possibly ? regards Phil |

Pubs in Cotmanhay circa 1875
replied on: 11/14/2006 11:44:22 PM Hi Phil, Sorry but I did not see that you had replied to my message of July 06 - I must look at this site more often as it really is interesting. Thanks for telling me where to find the photo of the now demolished Brick and Tile pub which was once owned by my ancestors in the 1850s! I have added more info which I hope will prove useful. I have also looked at the other photos but could not find the Shorthose captions which you mentioned - can you enlighten me at all? Thanks. Christina |

Pubs in Cotmanhay circa 1875
replied on: 9/7/2006 12:47:34 PM Oh, yes there is. If you have a look on the picturethepast site and put cotmanhay in the search box it reveals 71 images. One is a picture of The Brick and Tile prior to demolition. Several other pictures refer to Shorthose in the caption. The society,s web site links page links to picturethepast and to a site with online trade directories. Both of these should prove of interest to you. There is a link on the forum to the society's web site. Enjoy, regards Phil |

Pubs in Cotmanhay circa 1875
replied on: 9/7/2006 9:31:52 AM Hi Robert Many thanks for your really prompt reply. I do remember passing The Mallard Pub which if I am correct was on the main road. It looked a huge place but as you say it was probably built in the 60s. I dont suppose there would be any old photos anywhere of the B&T? By the way do you have any Shorthose names in your family tree? - there is a John Shorthose, of Milton & Mary Mee of Ingleby, married June 21, 1698 who could be possible ancestors. Just a thought. Many thanks once again for this great website! |

replied on: 9/7/2006 6:55:56 AM Hi The Brick and Tile is now called the Mallard, but the building is much more recent, perhaps 1960's. Welcome to the site! Robert |

Pubs in Cotmanhay circa 1875
replied on: 9/6/2006 11:50:08 PM Hi, My GGGG Grandfather was a John Shorthose of 4 Church St. Cotmanhay & mentions in his Will dated 1875 that he owned, among many other properties in the area, The Brick and Tile Pub "with gardens & outbuildings in Cotmanhay now in the occupation of my son in law George Willoughby" and I wondered if this pub still exists with that name or was it changed to another name. Cotmanhay seems such a small place and the only pubs I saw certainly did not have that name. Can anyone enlighten me please? If anyone has any other interesting information/anecdotes on the Shorthose family I would be happy to hear from them. At least 3 generations lived in Church St, Cotmanhay from early 1800s to approx 1924. I already know a fair bit but any extra info would be good to have. Many thanks. Christina |
