Mapperley's Boundary
replied on: 10/1/2006 5:20:59 PM

Mapperley and West hallam come under different Borough Councils -West Hallam (I believe) comes under Erewash and Mapperley under Amber Valley-which often causes confusion-especially as some years ago the postal address for Mapperley was changed from Mapperley Derbys to Mapperley Ilkeston Derby!
Many of the villiagers still refuse to put Ilkeston in their postal address.
Also the phone numbers in Mapperley are 0115 -which is also the code for many areas of Nottingham -especially confusing as there is Mapperley Nottingham to contend with.

Re lighting-Mapperley had electric lighting before Ilkeston !

And, fortunately for those of us who live in West Hallam, it never happened!

From the Nottingham Evening News
Friday 6th May 1960.
WEST HALLAM HAS 'BETTER LIGHTING'
Mapperley Village has joined West Hallam on the boundary question in their objection to joining Ilkeston. It was stated at West Hallam Parish Council last night that boundary extension would include Shipley,Mapperley,Stanley,Stanley Common and West Hallam.
"We shall not give way on anything in West Hallam," said the chairman,Mr.H.Brewer. Objections had been lodged "pretty smartly," he said.
If West hallam joined Ilkeston the village would have all the disadvantages and none of the advantages. "Ilkeston's lighting cannot compare with West Hallam's," pointed out Mr.Brewer.
