i remember those geese well Robert..i used to drink in the butchers arms and to get through the path at the side of what was a shop then, was a nightmare.i always thought the same people that owned the shop also owned the farm also.

I understand that the last people to farm there were the Wardle's. Their geese were infamous! It was situated somewhere where the army cadets hut was later built.

From Bulmers 1895,

Riley Joseph, farmer, 50 Hands Road
Smith Charles, cowkeeper, 36 Hands Road.

I will go through other directories later this week and post anymore info. The numbering sequence may have changed over the years. Hopefully the above will give a starter for further information.

An interesting query:

Any information on Red Hill Farm, Heanor or Langley Mill? Such as:
When was it built?
When was it demolished?
Who owned the land ?
Who owned the farm ?
The farm was situated near the Butchers Arms, Hands Road.
I believe there is a Scout Hut on the land.

I have found reference to the area around the junction of Laceyfields Road and Aldreds Lane being known as Red Hill, but that is all.

All contributions gratefully received!!!!
