No, you did miss anything in the previous posting. I intended the reference to a statue to indicate a typical statue in a typical medieval church. Apologies for any confusion caused.

Some basic information on the Knights Templar follows,

Founded in Jerusalem AD 1118 by Hugh de Payens and Geoffrey de St Aumer and several other unrecorded persons.

The Templard wore linen coifs, and red caps close over them; shirts and stockings of twisted mail, a sopra vest and broad belts, with swords inserted. Over the whole was a white cloak touching the ground. In opposition to the practice of most religous orders, the Templars wore long beards.

On the 8th of January, AD 1308, the Templars in all parts of England were suddenly arrested, and thir property seized by the King. This was as the result of a Papal bull issued earlier. The Archbishop of Canterbury ordered a papal bull to be issued threatening excommunication on all those who should protect. or show the least kindness to a Templar.

Think of the statue of a knight in a church and he is dressed almost as decribed above. I have some more detailed information to read through with regard to Knights Templar. I will post on this thread any information that relates to the local area.

Like the 24 carat ***** I am I did make a note of the source. When the Knights Templar were disbanded by force, the knights in England retired/retreated in to abbeys. There were several at Dale Abbey, one received a pension from the government of the time. This pension for some reason was back dated. This information is lurking somewhere on the net.

There is a feature on local abbeys at this link, http://www.ilkcam.com/specials/Monks%20Way/01%20Introduction.html.

hmmm...

Tricky, it depends on when the coats of arms were from... the account does not make it clear as to whether they had known that the vault was there in the first place. Though saying that from the fact that it had a large stone covering I can't see it being one that was moved very regularly even for the death of one of the greys. I think it was put there to effectivly seal it when the "new" medieval church was built.

The medieval church had some arms described Ashmole and Dugdale as :
East Chancel - Arms of Grey : Barry of six Arg[ent] and Az[ure].
Upper south window - Two Knights holding the arms of Grey (as above) in the same window the arms of Grey of Sussex, York and Licoln : barry of six Arg[ent] and Az[ure], a bend company or. and gu.

ermmm... see http://www.yorkshirehistory.com/towton/Sir%20Henry%20Grey%20Lord%20Grey%20of%20Codnor.htm for a better idea

As the Castle and manor went over to the Zouch family in 1496 the windows were either moved from the Saxon church and therefore contempory with the knights or installed when the medieval church was built in a last show of power and wealth by the Greys.

In 1893 the Derbyshire Archaeological Journal published an article by Frederick C Corfield about Codnor castle (Vol. 15 for those wishing to read the full article) with the following information given about one of the vaults.

"When the body of the old parish church of Heanor was taken down in 1868 to be replaced by the present building, the Codnor castle vault was broken open by the falling of one of the beams of the nave roof.

The large stone covering the steps about three feet to the east of the present font was shattered, and on its removal an inspection of the interior of the vault was made by the rector and myself, accompanied by Mr. Woodhead, one of the churchwardens. Here we found seventeen leaden coffins, most of which lay side by side upon the floor, several smaller ones being placed upon them. Some of the larger ones measured from seven feet, to seven feet four inches in length, and upon three at least of them were what appeared to have been swords and shields of arms, but these crumbled away as soon as touched.

The vault was afterwards filled with other coffins taken from beneath the old square pews, and lying above the present floor level, and a gravestone having been placed over the entrance, the whole was covered with concrete"
