Churchwardens, Bells & Bell-ringers

1902 H/O 12th Dec, The Parish Church Bells. On the secret of success, Danton say’s “In order to conquer what we need is to dare, still to dare and always to dare.” Surely this spirit has been manifested with regard to the scheme for securing a peal of eight bells for Heanor. The interest of the general public has been secured through the influence of Mr. J. Andrews, J. P., chairman of the council, who has taken the initiative in the scheme and done so much for its unexpected success. The original intention was to raise £200 but so daring have the collectors been that over £5000 has been willingly subscribed, and the whole of the expenditure involved will be met. The clergy and church wardens Holbrook and Mayfield have been backed up by an energetic committee, Mr H. J. Windle has been a tower of strength as secretary. Amongst the collectors Mr. Joseph Briggs has been almost ubiquitous he has been well assisted by Mr. C. Marshall, Supt Daybell has been full of enthusiasm, and together with his colleague Dr. Roe, has netted a substantial sum. The other collector, all of whom have done exceedingly well, are Messrs Abel Toplis, Jas Walker, Wm Voss, Albert Briggs, H. W. Gregory, C. H. Robinson, J. Hodges, A. H. Graham, G. Godber and D. W. Clarke. The arrival of the Bells on Friday created some what of a stir photographs of the bells together with the clergy wardens and secretary, were taken by Mr. A. Ooops.

Just read the date on the article (D'oh!) - will have to contact the Ripley and Heanor to see if A) can still get a copy and B) if Edith Cope will give her permission for the photo to be used!

hmmm...

This one is unrelated, but I really don't want to start up a new thread for it.

In one of the the parish magazines where I was looking for a note I'd made about bell ringers I've just spotted a referance to the windmill in Marlpool having been demolished in 1891.

I knew that Marlpool had a windmill (opposite where All Saints is?) but hadn't realised that it was demolished that late - do we know if a photo was taken before it was demolished - I've not seen it in the "lost buildings" sections of the publications.

sorry I put this in the wrong place!

The Ripley and Heanor News Jan 29th 1971
HEANOR CHURCH BELLS
1902
reading from right to left of the picture are the Rev. Phillips, Dr. Turton, Mr. John Holbrook (rector's warden), Rev. C.E.L. Corfield (later Canon Corfield of Taunton), Mr. T. Mayfield (people's warden), Mr T. Crook (clerk and verger), foreman of the work, and Mr. T. Hamiton (a workman).
The above picture , lent by Mrs Edith P. Cope, of ---------- Crosshill, is a timely reminder of the recent appeal made for the restoration of the bells at St Lawrence's Church, Heanor. The photograph was taken when the five original bells were re-cast and the peal was increased to the full octave of eight in 1902. One of the bells was donated by the late Mr J. Holbrook, in memory of his son-in-law, Mr. H. Lovatt, who died at the early age of 27.

As mentioned in the Heanor town clock section we hope to launch the St Lawrence website soon.

With the information on the site will be sections dedicated (seperatly) to the church bells, the bell ringers and the churchwardens.

At present we would like to see if we can find some information and photos about each of these subjects - we have the basic information but we would like more.

For the bells, we have information about them historicaly but we are trying to find more information about the 1902 changes when the the old wood bell frame was taken out and a new one installed increasing the peal from 6 to 8 - do we know if any early photographers documented the event? - I know some towns used such events to make postcards of the bells.

For the bell-ringers ANY information would be appreciated. We will be in contact with the current tower captain shortly for any information he has, but we would like to find out if any photos exist of earlier generations of ringers (hand and change - the church had both at one point), or any family tales about family members who were ringers - for example Thomas Gillot who died Dec 4th 1757 in the ringing loft having just rung the call to service.

Churchwardens is a longer term project as it is going to take quite a bit of research to restore the data. We have the churchwardens from 1584-1743, and we hope to reconstruct some of the information from the Litchfield, Southwell and Derby Dioceses but cannot be sure how much they can provide. We would like any information people come across about the churchwardens; family members who were churchwardens, a family diary that meantions a churchwarden, a newsaper article that meantion a churchwardens name, an old parish magazine that has the churchwardens as contacts - basically anything!

If you know a family member was a churchwarden but you are not sure of the date (or better, if you know the date) we would also appreciate the name (and if possible a copy / scan of the photograph of them) if no date is known we will store the data and add it once we know the year.

RMMee - I am not sure if I can make it to the next meeting as my shift is uncertain at present (was very annoyed when they changed my shift so that I wasn't able to get to the Ilkeston dig one!) would you be able to have an announcment made in the notices section of the meeting for a request of the above information from members who dont go online? - thanks
