Langley Swimming Baths

I can remember many a happy afternoon spent at the baths. Among the gang I went about with from Ebenezer Street, there were various "dares" we came up with, all of which were forbidden by Mr Evans, and were "chucking out" offences. It was all part of the "make your own challenges" that was prevalent in those days.

One was to dive off the high wall into the shallow pool. You wer diving from about 8 feet up into about 3 feet of water. After hitting the water, about half a second later you crashed into the pool floor with many a bloody nose for the unwary.

You also had to be able to do a length underwater. The easiest way was to dive in from the shallow end of the big pool, where by backing up into the triangular corner you could get a good run-up.

One feat I never managed was to dive off the rail at the back of the high board. It was scary stuff as you only missed the front edge of the diving board by inches and you need a mate to hold you steady as you climbed onto the rail.

And there was "bombing" the girls who were sunbathing....

I remember too, that if the pool edges were getting too clogged up with sunbathers and the pool was a bit empty, Mr Evans used to get his washing down hose out to chase folks back into the water.

And I still somewhere have my 10 yards swimming certificate!
