Maggie Thatcher was known as "Maggie Thatcher - Milk Snatcher" in playgrounds and staff rooms throughout the land.

I remember the milk bottles. They were abolished for secondary schools by Harold Wilson, but Margaret Thatcher got the blame when she abolished them for primary and infant schools.

You wern't allowed to swig the milk from the bottle, you had to use a straw in case there was "glass in the bottle" and of course there never was!

[When I first typed this I did a typo and wrote mild bottles. Now that would be an interesting idea!]

Those little 1/3 pint milk bottles at school? They used to freeze up in winter which was great as it took longer to drink!

Re: not letting women into the tap room.

When I see chucking out time on the country's town centres, and see some young women falling out of the pub, out of their low tops and into the gutters, I wonder if we have made progress or reverted to the "gin mothers" of the 19 century.

Bring back "Men only Taprooms!"

Or am I just a Grumpy Old Man.

Can you remember when women weren't allowed to go into some of the pubs in Heamor? In others they couldn't go into the "tap room" and had to sit in the "snug" or lounge.

When my mum and dad moved into this, their first house after leaving the RAF, they bought the house and inherited a lodger who lived in the front room!

Can you imagine that happening nowadays?!

Another use of the parlour!
very often the parlour was let to a young married couple to begin their new life together.
it was known as "living in rooms!"

Stanley, you have so many memories of how life used to be - you are an inspiration.
Let's have some more
