Queens Head
replied on: 7/18/2007 11:09:17 PM Have a look on the picture the past site (link on society link page)and put Marlpool in to the search box. The only image that shows the Queens Head is an image of the pond. The pub is in the left of centre background with the roofline and upper walls visible. Not the best of views but a starter for 10 hopefully. From Bulmer's Directory 1895 John Henry Winfield, Queen's Head, 1 Breach Road in the list of Marlpool Public Houses. He is also listed as a beer retailer in a different list for Marlpool. In an 1850 directory there is listed a Boam William, beer retailer, Marlpool. No address given but maybe same place as Queen's Head prior to building work. regards Phil |

replied on: 6/25/2007 8:47:38 PM Hi there, I've spoken to the owners and they tell me that the extension was originally built as a separate cottage, which would explain why the the pub is on two levels (upstairs and downstairs). The cottage was built about the late 1880's. The new bit though is the top side of the original, which doesn't really explain why it looks further away from the main road on the old maps. The owner has asked if anyone has any old photographs of the Queens Head, would they consider letting him have a copy, as he would possibly like to display them in the re-opened pub. |

replied on: 6/7/2007 12:21:30 AM Andy Thanks for that and welcome to the forum. I hadn't thought of the building being extended - that would explain why it doesn't look so close to the main road on the old maps. Keep us updated on anything you find. |

replied on: 6/6/2007 8:35:48 PM I'm a new boy on the forum but I thought I would let you know the date on the Queens Head is 1862. This is the original part as it was extended later on. I will try and find out the date of the extension from the new owners. |

replied on: 5/15/2007 7:42:06 PM I'm really not sure that its one of the oldest! Looking at the 1901 map, it is hard to tell whether it is there or not. Still, good that they are going to be a decent pub!!! |
