New Book - Aldercar School
replied on: 8/13/2007 12:28:52 PM We always called it 'Colditz' after the then current TV series about the POW camp. One day at assembly someone put on the theme tune instead of the usual rubbish we had. Great. The badge in the 70s was 'faith and work'. Not much of either really. |

New Book - Aldercar School
replied on: 7/16/2007 4:52:12 PM I have just got a copy of the Aldercar book and it is a must! So many things about the school I didn't know, despite going there for 4 years (60-64). Never knew the school badge was a water wheel - Langley Mill - geddit! Never heard the school being called the concentration camp, as it was in the early days, although I did hear of Mr Martyn the first head beig called "Hitler" [but in 1955 the war was only 10 years ago]. Never thought of the school as being revolutionary, but the flat roof style seen commonly now was pioneered at Aldercar. The book seems a bit hard on Dr Farmer-Little, the second head, who was there when I attended. He didn't seem the type who took prisioners, but it was perhaps the style of leadership needed at the time. Its well worth a tenner. Wesley |

New Book - Aldercar School
replied on: 6/27/2007 10:23:10 PM AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGH!!!! I left that place of horror 28 years ago and still I wake up screaming. Are you sure its not Mary SHELLEY who wrote it? Good God. It fair makes the blood run cold. Mind you I might have to have a look at it. Just to see if it was as horrific an experience as I recall. Probably be quite interesting in a nasty road accident kind of way, the kind you dont want to look at in case you have nightmares but cant resist a peep. You know what, whoever said schooldays were the happiest of your life was some kind of sicko. Has anyone truly ever wished they were back there? |

New Book - Aldercar School
replied on: 6/21/2007 9:50:42 AM For those who attended (and for those who didn't but are nevertheless interested), a book has recently been published entitled "Aldercar, the Story of a School." The authors are Mary and John Sheppard. It was prepared to celebrate the 50th anniversary of what is now the Aldercar Language College, formerly Heanor Aldercar Secondary School, which opened in 1955. It costs £10, but that is pretty good value, bearing in mind that it has over 220 pages, and lots of photos. Its ISBN is 0-9554746-0-6. I know it is on sale at Frosts on Market Street, and it is no doubt available elsewhere. The Society will have a stock of them by the time our new season begins in September. |
