replied on: 8/1/2007 7:00:18 PM A bit more delving in the tip of my filing system reveals some more information. It is taken from mining statistics for 1884 compiled by Robert Hunt. I have lost the title but here is some info from a List of Owners and Managers under the Coal Mines Regulations, in the Midlands District,1884. quote Owner, Mundy Alfred M, Name of Coal worked, (NoCw) Deep Hard and Deep Soft, Name of Mine (NoM,) Woodside, NoCw, Deep Soft, NoM Nutbrook, NoCw Deep Hard, NoM Coppice, Location Shipley, Agent or Manager F C Gillett, M.E., Agent, Robert H Robinson unquote. From the above it would appear that R H Robinson was the manager of the three collieries. At the time the Coal Mines Regulations allowed a person to be the manager of more than one colliery providing that their shafts were no more that three miles apart. regards Phil |

replied on: 7/31/2007 9:02:44 PM From Wrights 12 miles around Nottingham published 1888 quote Robert Robinson, manager at Mr Mundy's Colliery, Marlpool House unquote. That is from the entry for Heanor and district residents and their occupations. I would take that to mean he was the manager for Woodside Colliery. Bulmers 1895 directory lists a Robt Hy Robinson of Mundy Street as a Mining Engineer, Architect and Surveyor. Could this be Robinson jnr, with Robinson snr now retired. regards Phil |

replied on: 7/31/2007 8:09:31 PM I have had a look on the Coal Mining History Resource Centre site but no joy with Robert Henry Robinson. He does appear on the Durham Mining Museum site in the list of certificated mine managers. He is shown as being awarded the the Mine Managers Certificate (1st class) on 26th Feb 1874. He is listed as being employed in the Midlands Area of the Mines Inspectorate. regards Phil |
