Man in Space Pub

I can remember the pub being opened in the 1960's to quite a bit of excitement due to it's unusual name. Can anyone remember what was on the site before the pub was built?

I have seen "Carry on At Your Convenience" many times, but have never noticed the "Man in Space" pub sign. Well spotted Wesley. I will watch the film more carefully next time.
