Man in Space Pub
replied on: 8/9/2007 10:52:23 AM

There was originally a pub on the site of the Man in Space - it was in a row of buildings (possibly cottages) and the pavement was wider than usual pavements - the row of buildings/cottages was interupted by Castle St.
My husband's grandfather knew the landlord there - 1940's-50's - but the name of the pub escapes him at the moment.

It could have been the Coach and Horses.

From "Around Old Eastwood"
"It was at Hill Top that the second of Eastwood's Toll Bars was sited, the other being on Derby Rd. A chain was slung across the road. The tolls were imposed to pay for the maintenance of the highways, and it was a punishable offence to attempt to avoid payment.
Inkerman Street and Alma Street, both names associated with the Crimean War have now been renamed Castle St and Cross St. The Coach and Horses, one of three public houses once situated at Hill Top was originally a Coaching Inn with stabling at the rear. In the days when betting was illegal, the police would keep watch for evidence of betting taking place from vantage points such as Hewson's shop and the Cooperative store. The houses on the right have been replaced by Phoenix Court."

The description of the position of the Coach and Horses (from this article) certainly sounds like it was on the site of the Man in Space, but as yet the name doesn't ring any bells!- possibly because we can only think of 2 pubs at Hill Top -The Castle and The Man in Space (possibly Coach and Horses) - further investigation is needed!

At least we know there was a pub on the site before the "Space" was built.
