Heanor Observer
12th Feb 1942
Mr. Terence Minkley Miss Ethel Walters
An exceptionally pretty wedding and one in which much local interest was evinced, was solemnised at the Heanor Parish Church on Saturday last. The parties concerned were Miss Ethel Walters only daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Walters of the “Lord Nelson” Inn Nelson St Heanor, and Mr Terence Minkley second son of Mr and Mrs J. Minkley of Moorfield Brinsley. The bride’s father is a past-president and the present treasurer of the Heanor and District Licensed Victualler’s Association and the bridegroom is a member of a well-known Brinsley building firm. Given away by her father, the bride wore a dress of Nottingham lace over white satin, cut in classical style her long veil of hand embroidered silk was held in position with white velvet camellias and she carried a bouquet of white carnations and fern. She was attended by her friends Mrs Flo Green and Mrs Dora Holmes, who were attired in crinoline dresses of green silk net over green satin with silver headdresses. The attendants carried pink muffs with posies of flowers attached.
The choral service was conducted by the Rev. D. G. Smith, vicar Mr Eric Lacey was the organist, and in addition to accompanying the singing of the hymn “Eternal Father” played bridal music during the signing of the register. Mr Tom Taylor of Brinsley friend of the bridegroom was best man.
Upon leaving the church the bride received a lucky horseshoe from Shirley Houson.
Upward of 80 guests attended the reception held at the Heanor Miners Welfare Institute, where both bride and bridegroom received the congratulation and good wishes of their many friends. Among the many valuable gifts received was a cut-glass trinket set from the patrons of the “Lord Nelson” Inn.

From the Register of Licensed Victuallers for the area:

Frederick Walters became the licence holder for the Lord Nelson on 16/1/1928.

The next licensee was John Ball, who was the landlord from 1950 to 1966. (Back-street boozers tended to keep their landlords longer than on the high street!)

The pub, which was owned by Home Brewery of Nottingham, had a beer-only licence - there was no wine or spirits to be had there.

The pub finally closed on 9/10/1966.

Fred's death is listed in the indexes as Nottingham. There are no Walters women listed in the Nottingham district in q1 or q2.

the following women are listed in those quarters in other districts:-

Daisey M 67 Q1 Basford 3c 74
Hannah 78 Q1 Belper 3a 66
Lilian M 57 Q2 Basford 3c 37.

Jenny

I've forwarded the article, which was gratefully received.

Anything regarding Fred's wife? According to the article, she died three months before her husband, but Maggie can't find any record on the GRO of her death. There's a possibility her name was Frances, but they're not sure.

(I've not posted the actual clipping as the photo really doesn't come out too well.)

21st July 1950
Ripley & Heanor News
DEATH OF HEANOR LICENSEE
Mr Fred Walters
Much sympathy has been evinced by the death of Mr Fred Walters, of the Lord Nelson Inn, Heanor, which occurred at Nottingham General Hospital, at the age of 67 years. Before coming to the Lord Nelson 23 years ago, Mr Walters was licensee of the White Swan Basford. A popular sportsman, he played both cricket and football, and was a keen follower of national and local events. He was treasurer of the Heanor Branch of the Licensed Victualler’s Association, and past president, and chairman of the Property Owners Association. During the war years he assisted in the raising of many funds for local servicemen.
Mr Walters was retiring from public business at the end of July and had been in failing health for some time. He was predeceased by his wife three months ago, and leaves one daughter. At the interment at Underwood in addition to family mourners, were Mr. R. Beighton (representing Heanor L.V.A.) and Mrs. L. Hicking (representing the customers of Lord Nelson Inn). Apart from family tributes, there were wreaths from The Directors of Home Brewery Co. Ltd Heanor L.V.A., Mr and Mrs Gregg, Mr. Luker, Mr and Mrs W. Smith Nottingham House Friends, and font and flowers from friends at the Lord Nelson Inn.

Plus photo I will send a copy to Robert (its not a very good copy)

Hello and a Happy New Year

I'm helping a friend with his family research and we have just obtained a death certificate for his grandfather Frederick Walters who died in 1950 at the General Hospital in Nottingham.

At the time of his death he was landlord at the Lord Nelson Public House in Nelson Street, Heanor.

I wondered if anyone knew this gentleman or any of his family. Frederick had a daughter, Ethel, who married Terence Minkley in 1942.

I would love to hear from anyone who may help to put me in contact with family members.

Thank you - Maggie
