Amber Valley Borough Council claims that the buisiness run by Mr Percy Russell and Mr Chris Pickering at 32 Wall Street Ripley is unauthorised. The council has issued an enforcement notice requiring the buisiness to cease within the next 6 months because of complaints from adjacent householders.They say it is dangerous to a primarily residential area The pair have appealed to the Secretary of State and a Government inspector will hear the case. Could not find a follow up in the Telegraph

When death reg is derby I just assume (know I shouldn't) that the death occurred in one of the Derby Hospitals I know a Russell in Mapperley village -i may give them a call (just rung -no connection)
Jennypeg Researcher	Ernest Russell replied on: 1/22/2008 1:13:58 PM Hi Suzard, I’ve had a look at 2001 papers for Percy Russell no luck in finding him, I also thought I needed some fresh air so I’ve had a walk round Ripley Cemetery I found Sergt E.E.Russell’s war grave it stands on its own and not part of a family plot also looked for Percy Russell’s grave where 2001 graves are no luck again he could still be buried there in a family plot but we would need to look at the burial records for that. suzard Researcher This message was updated on 1/22/2008 2:16:13 PM by suzard	Ernest Russell replied on: 1/21/2008 1:41:46 PM And a little more information The Gazette 20th May 1943 has the report of his death -but an address is included and sister Leslie(overseas) was married -her name being Mrs L Grainger. looks like "baby Brian" was Lily's son here's some of the report "On Friday last Mr and Mrs D E Russell of 204 Nottingham Rd Ripley received notification that their son Sgt Pilot E E Russell had been accidentally killed while on service....... mourners... Mrs L Grainger (sister)..... floral tributes Lily and baby Brian..... " May fill in a few blanks to help trace relatives?

Robert, have you noticed from the funeral reprt Ernest was a former pupil of HGS? Is he on your List?? -Just checked with my PCless friend -and he is on the list.
Jennypeg Researcher	Ernest Russell replied on: 1/21/2008 12:22:19 PM 21st May 1943 Ripley & Heanor News THE TOLL OF THE WAR Ripley Airman Killed Much sympathy will be felt with Mr and Mrs D. E. Russell, whose son, Sergt Pilot E. E. Russell has been killed on active service as the result of a plane accident somewhere in England. The deceased airman was educated at Heanor Secondary School and was a former member of Ripley Parish Church Choir and Ripley C.L.B. Prior to volunteering for service with the R.A.F. in 1941 he was employed as an accountant at Peek-wash Mills. Receiving his training in Canada Sergt Russell prior to returning to England, has served in America and South Africa. With several operational flights to his credit, it is particularly regrettable that a promising career should have been terminated in such circumstances. The remains were laid to rest in Ripley Cemetery on Wednesday, when prior to the interment, a service was held in the Parish Church, conducted by the Rev. H. P. Hargreaves, M.C. M.A. (vicar) who also officiated at the grave side. Draped with the Union Jack and the C.L.B. Standard, the coffin was borne into church by N.C.O.’s of the C.L.B. in Sergt Inst Flint, Corpl Riley, Corpl Ottewell, Corpl Bestwick, Corpl Stapleton and Corpl Charlton, whilst a guard of honour consisting of members of the Brigade lined the approach and preceded the cortege to the cemetery. The mourners were: father and mother; Miss L. Russell sister; Mr P. Russell brother; and Capt P. Alton. Deceased ‘s former employers were represented by the manager of the firm (Mr Seedhouse). Floral tributes were from mother father; Percy; Leslie (overseas); Lily; baby Brian; Charles (North Africa); Kath friend; Auntie Phoebe and uncle Fred; Commanding Officer; Flight Sergts and Sergts; N.C.O’s and Airmen (R.A.F. station); Mrs Graham; Roy and Maurice; Directors of Peekwash Mills; former office colleagues; Ripley C.L.B.; Mr and Mrs Grainger and Bert; Directors of Ripley’s Ltd’ neighbours and friends, Mr and Mrs Walker and Betty; Mrs Connelly and family; Bertha and Michael. If anyone can assist, please get in touch with me, and I will pass the message on. "I am writing to you in the hope you can assist us in finding living relatives of Sergeant Ernest Edward Russell. He was living in Ripley at the time of his death, 13th May 1943. Sergeant Russell was a Sergeant in the RAF and he was part of the 24 Operational Training Unit Air Bomber. The plane (Whiteley Bomber) crashed in the village of Castle Eaton, Wiltshire, after developing a mechanical failure in the engine. All the crew on the plane, 5 men, died. One of them was my grandfather, Gerald Francis Broadbent. Fortunately, the pilot of the bomber managed to divert the plane away from the village so no one else was killed. Sgt Russell was the son of D.E Russell and Rosa Russell of Ripley. In May this year, there is to be a ceremony in the villag of Castle Eaton to conmemorate the crash. This is being organised by Adrian MacKay... We would like any living relatives of Sgt Russell to attend and would be most grateful for any help you can offer us in finding any living relatives. I realise you would not normally make such appeals but I would be grateful for any help you can give. Thank you Francesca Lozano"
