Robert, Just spoken to 2 people who left school in July 1859 and one is certain she wore a beret all the way through school, the other is 95% sure. So it seems the last school year they were compulsory was Sept1958/July 1959. Which confirms they were phased out by school year Sept 1959/July 1960.
I am 100% certain they were not worn by Sept 1959, but was not too sure about the previous year.
