Air-raid Shelters

The shelters would be very close to underground roadways in width and height so could have been used in the training of Bevin Boys. The accomodation would have been the school building(s) with theory training at the technical school at the other end of the footpath.

The initial training of Bevin Boys was for six weeks then on to work proper, with lodging near to the pit.

Phil,

I'm a bit confused re this.

Was the Lockton Avenue Girls' School used for the accommodation of Bevin Boys? Were the HGS shelters used for training purposes for Bevin Boys?

Or was this just a proposed activity?

I have seen no reference to the shelters being so used in the HGS Governors' minutes, though it is possible that in wartime they would not have discussed it, but rather just got on with it.
