We had a very eventful trip to Derby and Matlock while there in England. And we were fortunate to get through Terminal 5 a few days after it opened.

Sorry to say, through a couple of phone calls I learned that there are no descendants of my grandmother's cousin, Ellen "Nellie" Moon Shaw and her husband Enoch there in Heanor or anywhere else. But thank you all for your help in attempting to find them.

What beautiful country you have there in Derbyshire.

Thank you for your post about the Enoch Shaw photo. I will check it out when thereis an opportunity.

I look forward to contact with his descendants to discuss our common ancestors, James Moon (1751 - 1834) and Sarah Abell (1743 - 1800).

Off I go into the iwld blue yonder.

I really must get round to compiling an index to the photographs which the Society has published (let alone the ones we haven't!)

On page 8 of 'Life in Old Heanor' there is a photo of Enoch Shaw and a class of his violin pupils.

The caption reads: Mr Enoch Shaw and his class of local boy pupils 1906. The violins and bows cost one pound each and the cost of learning to play was 9d per lesson. Mr Shaw was employed at I & R Morley's and played in the orchestra at the Heanor Empire for a number of years. He was in great demand to play at local dances and musical events.

I am having trouble getting through on email through the list. How would you like me to share my information? I can send email as attachment or type it into email message.

We will be leaving March 11th out of Los Angeles to London and hope to get to Derbyshire about the 15th.

No more quakes, I hope. Sharon in overcast Oregon

What luck! Do I post my additional information on this site or do I communicate with you directly?

James Moon b. abt. 1751 of Denby buried 22 Jun 1834 same is the end of the line for me.
And John Abel, b. abt 1708 of Denby d. Bef 1789 is also the end of the line. He is the father of Sarah Abel b. 19 Apr 1743 Denby buried 24 Jan 1800. However, I do have informtion on several generations back from Sarah.

Let me know if you have information or would like me to share what I have.

How fortunate. Sharon in Oregon

Hannah Moon was born 1826 in Denby. She married Thomas (Wafit) Hunt in 1863 in the parish church there.

Her father was John Moon born 1787 in West Hallam and mother Frances Lowater born 1791 in Notts.

Her Moon grandfather was James Moon born about 1751 of Denby and grandmothre was Sarah Abel born 1743 in Denby.

I do have records of all of the children involved so have many Moons listed in Mapperley, Marehay, Smalley - Stanley Commong, West Hallam, Kirk Hallam, Ilkeston, etc.

There are many other of our family names there in Derbyshire; not all direct ancestors. Abel, Bardell, Browne, Cheetam,Fox, Greatorix, Harrison Hart, Hodgskinson, Hogg, Hunt, Jerrum and many more.

My mother’s first cousin, Ina Hunt Tuft, who is 97 this year visited and researched in Derbyshire for many years. She and her sister, Vee loved it there. Up until about three years ago she was active on email and she gave me all of the information that I have.

Sharon hi,

I have lots of Moons in my family...my grandmother was a Moon!

Her lot come from Mapperley/Stanley/Denby, but I'm almost certain that because there are so many, the other Moons could eventually have ended up more locally!

We know earthquakes. We are originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and have had some experiences.

We will spend some time in Derbyshire searching out additional information on my Moon line. But many who are much better researchers than I have tried to untangle the family name and have failed.

Thank y'all for your assistance.
